The statue of Dimos Zoulias

Το άγαλμα του Δήμου Ζούλια
He was the son of Pantazis Zoulias. He worked and prospered as a merchant in Egypt, in the city of Helwan. Being unmarried, he left thousands of English pounds in his will to the Community of Portaria for the following projects:
  • £3,500 was allocated for the establishment of a vocational school for poor men and women, which would bear his name, the Zoulia Municipality School. The school operated for several years in the current building that houses the Historical and Folklore Museum of Portaria. The curriculum of the school mainly consisted of a full program of domestic science courses, but there was also training for residents on agricultural principles and the promotion of new cultivars of various varieties..
  • £1,000 for the construction of the new church “Agion Taxiarchon” on the site of the old one, in the present-day “XENIA Hotel”. He requested that his mother’s name, whose grave was near the church, be given to the small square where today a monument-column stands and their bones are buried.
  • £600 for the renovation of the church of Agios Nikolaos and Panagia Portarea where a family monument is preserved.
  • £200 for the construction of a fountain in Adamena and the beautification of the square, projects that are preserved until today.
  • £800 for the relocation of the cemetery to Agia Paraskevi (on the road to Makrinitsa), so that the students of the former professional school would not see the funeral processions.
  • He left another £5,000 to the National Bank for the maintenance of the school.
  • During his lifetime, his works included financial assistance for the organization of the Portaria Electric Company and the erection of the Community and Municipal Store in the square of Agios Nikolaos.
  • Through his donations, he contributed to the construction of the Portaria Electricity Company. At this specific location stands the statue (bust) of Dimitris Zoulias, facing north-east, so that he overlooks the entire settlement.
