Profitis Prodromos Monastery

Here was the Monastery of the Prophet Ioannis Prodromos of Nea Petra, founded in the 13th century by the Byzantine rulers of the Melissinos family. It was the initial and main gathering place for residents, resulting in the development of the local community. In 1850, the curch located here(cathedral of the Monastery), was restored with the contibution of Monk Paisios and it is maintained to this day.
In 1951, K. Filliponis was entrusted with the demolition of the South Cells (the northern ones were already ruins and had been turned into a pasture) in order to create children camps. In those years, hungry children were predisposed and no attention was paid to the restoration/maintenance of the ancient monastery. Until 1956, Red Cross camps operated in the area, which were lately moved. Later, children camps operated on the site again.
