Portaria's Theater “Aitafitiko”

The Portaria Theater was, for many years, a place where children played during the 1800s or where villagers discarded their waste. It was known as “bayir”: a lower area with few trees. It belonged to someone named Hatzis-Tsoulkhas, who left it to monks in his will, and during that time, it was under the jurisdiction of the Holy Sepulchre, hence the name “Aitafitiko” (from the greek word “tafos” which means grave).
The monks utilized and managed a small olive grove for the benefit of the village’s poor. Later, this property passed into the ownership of Yiannis Bailas, who was one of the doctors in the area and a prominent representative of the “tsourmas,” meaning the people. Eventually, today at this location, there is the well-known “small theater” where events, especially during the summer months, take place. There is also a small square of brotherhood, in honor of the twinning of our village with the village of Tour-Tour in France. The monument located here is a simulation of the tower in the sister village in France.
