Portaria's Elementary School

In the year 1883, a two-storey building was built by Nikolaos Tsopotos to house a boys’ school and a scholarchy, the so-called Tsopotio School. Later it will function until 1932 as a semi-high school. In the 1940-1950 decade, due to the destruction of the Athanasakios kindergarten during the burning of Portaria by the Germans, the kindergarten will also be co-located with the primary school building. In 1955 due to the earthquakes, the upper floor of the school will be removed. This will continue until the 1990-2000 decade with approximately 25 to 30 students.

In 1997, the school turned to a four-teacher school with the merger of Katichori and Stagiates schools. In 1998, due to the renovation of the school building and the addition of a new floor, the school was then housed in the Zoulias Mansion(Portaria Museum). In 1999, the elementary school returned to its headquarters, and now operates as a six-teacher, pilot, full-day school(1 of the 28 in the country). School operated longer hours, with children having time for preparation, eating, activities and plenty of educational field trips. Nikolaos Tsopotos was an active member in the village society, participating in the local government and in the political scene, even representing, for a period of time, the party of Kojabasis. It is probable that he was a stern man; it is said that the locals bowed down before him in the tunes of Temenades.
