Where did Portaria get its name?

The chapel of Panagia Portarea is one of the most significant religious monuments in Portaria. The area took its name from the chapel, which was once part of one of the largest monasteries in the region.
The original chapel was built before 1273, during the time when Bishop Michael of Dimitriada granted it to Anna Melissini or Malissiani, the wife of the Byzantine local governor of Dimitriada, Nikolaos Melissinos. The single-roomed, wooden-roofed, small church of Panagia was constructed in the 16th century on top of the Byzantine church of Panagia Portarea from the 13th century.
The church has dimensions of 10 meters in length and 9 meters in width. The central entrance is adorned with an image of Panagia (as was the case in the monastery), and the carved wooden iconostasis was built in the early 18th century, funded by Mr. Christos Moraitis. The rare frescoes, dated by inscription to 1581, depict the life of Panagia. The church is celebrated on August 15th
