Portaria is one of the 24 villages of Pelion. It’s located at an altitude 680m with a view of Pgasitikos gulf. It is the main village of the region, as it experienced great growth in the past and today it still maintains its population thanks to, mainly, local businesses that attract tourism. Even today, the memory of the past remains alive, from the thessalomacedonian style that adorns the area, the stone roofs, the picturesque paths and the crystal waters.
There are to versions behind the name of the village Portaria.
One refers to its geographical location, in the sense that it is the “porta=gate” of Pelion, since it is the first village someone meets on the way up from the city of Volos.
Towards the end of the Byzantine period, the monastery of Panagia Portarea was founded near the village, to which, according to the prevailing version, Portaria owes its name.
Portaria, according to the 2011 census, has 552 inhabitants. The population of our village increases during the summer months due to the return of Portarians who live in other areas of Greece, as well as a large number of tourists that visit Portaria to enjoy their summer vacation.
The village of Portaria can offer peaceful and relaxing holidays. Visitors have the opportunity to come into contact with nature, enjoy the mountain paths, meet hospitable people and try some of the traditional delicacies.
