The Papadiamantis Fountain

The Papadiamantis (or Tsopotou) Fountain was built with a donation from Nikolaos Tsopotοs and is located behind “Despotiko Hotel”, which was once the residence of Nikolaos Tsopotos, the founder of the “Tsopoteio School” Portaria’s current elementary school.
Alexandros Papadiamantis, also known as “Kosmokalogeros (a man who lives in society but has renounced worldly. pleasures)”, used to visit Portaria and enjoy moments of peace and inspiration at this fountain.
It is the only “covered” spring in Portaria. Covered springs are characterized by two stone or wooden columns that connect the facade with the roof and support the latter, and a stone wall. In the center of it there is the “choufta (stone bowl)” from where the water flows. On its floor, there is the “gouva (hollow)” made of carved Pelion stone, used for tasks such as watering animals or washing clothes.

Alexandros Papadiamantis (1851 – 1911) is one of the most important Greek writers, known as “the saint of Greek literature.
